Through cutting edge documentary films and talks by community health leaders, this course will take you "behind the headlines" on health issues such as avian flu, the drug war, the Katrina disaster, environmental justice, and reproductive rights. We will investigate the social forces driving spiraling epidemics of cancer, HIV, asthma and obesity. Together we will explore how health outcomes are shaped by racism, class, gender and power. Learn what you can do to become an effective advocate for health and social justice. San Francisco State University
