RESOURCES

We have made an effort to include the major asthma organizations and resources.
Asthma is a rapidly expanding area of interest, however, so we may have missed
some and new resources emerge all the time. For this reason, we have also
included sites that have regularly updated, extensive resource pages. We have
included a selection of additional resources not specific to asthma that may be
useful for a prevention-oriented children's asthma program. These include
resources that address some of the social and economic barriers your patients
and families face, as well as resources that may help you plan, develop, run,
and improve your asthma program.

Patient Education Resources
For the patient handouts and health education materials, we have been very selective,
recommending only those that we think are the very best. What we mean by that is
that they follow NIH Guidelines (NHLBI-EPR2) and present the most current
information based on up-to-date research. We have also selected items that are
available in multiple languages, represent people and families of diverse backgrounds
and ethnicities, and use appropriate literacy levels so as to be widely accessible to
your patients. Be aware that knowledge about asthma is still changing fairly rapidly,
and treatment approaches are getting better. It will be important to update your
patient education materials regularly so that they continue to reflect the most
current guidelines and evidence-based practices.

Pharmaceutical companies and asthma supply vendors often can give you free
asthma education materials, such as videos, handouts, games, sample peak flow
meters, spacers, and the like. Peak flow meter companies may have tools for
calculating peak flow percentages. Ask the drug company representatives who
come to your clinic or contact drug companies directly. Before using these
materials with your patients, be sure to review them to make sure that the
information they teach about asthma matches NIH Guidelines.
